Ian Mikardo Xtra

Thanks to the Big Lottery, we offer a range of after school activities on five afternoons a week during term time.

These are open to young people aged 10 to 19 and include football and boxing, both facilitated by the West Ham Foundation, basketball, cooking, and DJ/music workshops.

We are pleased to welcome a group of girls who are doing a media assignment to support their GSCEs and A levels.

We offer training in self-employment skills and setting up a social enterprise. For parents, we offer football and cooking sessions. To get involved, contact

Hiring Ian Mikardo

At Ian Mikardo we seize any opportunity that might make us more effective and we're proud that the school reflects the diverse community around it.  When it was rebuilt in 2011, we made sure that the building was designed so that it could be of benefit to the community in Bromley-by-Bow.  We believe that by sharing our high specification resources with people who live nearby we can help local people to build on their skills and engage with a positive future.

For this reason our facilities are available for hire and we hope that they can be used for community training and education purposes as well as for recreation.  Just as our hair and beauty salon is used during school hours to teach our students about grooming and hygiene, we believe it would make a great training facility for young people who want to develop a career in hair and beauty.  Through this kind of enterprise we can help to create positive role models throughout the community.

Ian Mikardo, 1908-1993

Our school is named after Ian Mikardo, known as Mik, who was a Labour MP in East London from 1964 to 1987. Mik was an ardent socialist whose determination to address inequality and injustice was rooted in his own background – his parents were Jewish refugees from tsarist Russia so he understood what it was like to be poor and in exile.

When he went to school at three he spoke only a few words of English, which put him at a disadvantage. This meant that when, as an MP, he saw Bangladeshi children struggling to engage with school because of their language difficulties, he knew what they were up against.

Mik is remembered as a big personality, a man of integrity, and someone who was great fun. We are proud to carry his name and to remember what he stood for.
