The Wharf (July 2012) - Facing a mountain to climb

Facing a mountain to climb
By Rob Virtue

Intrepid mountain climbers raised more than £7,000 for a Tower Hamlets school for children with social, emotional and behavioural problems.  The group of eight who tackled Africa's highest mountain, Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, for Ian Mikardo High School in Bow included one of its former students, 24-year-old Jerome Weatherman.

"It was a challenge that has opened my eyes to the poverty in Africa," said Jerome, who is volunteering at Ian Mikardo.  "I've proved what I can do by meeting this massive challenge and I'm grateful for this amazing experience.

Head Teacher Claire Lillis also made ito the summit.  She said: "It's a tremendous achievement for the team and for the school.  We know that our students have great stregnths and this proves what they can do when they set theri minds to something that is really tough.  I'm very proud of everyone who took part."  The climb was sponsored in part by Canary Wharf bank Barclays.
