Britain's coolest school dining room

The funky refit – designed by the school’s Art department - is the latest food-related development at Ian Mikardo; in April, we were joined by Debbie, our on-site chef who cooks breakfast and lunch to order using organically sourced food. Now the students’ eating experience has been further enhanced by the exciting retro design and bespoke vinyls using their own art work.

“I like the furniture, and the juke box is a great idea,” says Perrie, a Year 8 student. “You sit down and it’s, oh my God, it’s like being in a real American diner.”

Head Teacher Claire Lillis loves the 50s style too. “We want our students to be healthy and we want them to have fun too,” she says. “I’ve wanted this kind of space for a long time – it’s stylish, it’s great for socialising, and as we look at the self-portraits of former students on the walls, we think about them at college and in their working lives, and remember the fantastic progress they’ve made.”
